BEIJING INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Introduction
Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), founded in 1940, is one of the national key universities in China, a research-oriented institution of science, engineering and liberal arts with science and engineering as the focus. BIT has been always attached great importance and receiving preferential support from the central government. It is one of the first Chinese universities to run a graduate school, one of the first 15 universities to enter “Project 211” and the 10th university to be approved into “Project 985”.  BIT is now under the supervision of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Operating across two main campuses (Zhongguancun and Liangxiang) in urban and suburban Beijing, the university has nearly 23,000 full time students as of the year 2010, including 14,000 undergraduate students, over 5,500 Master degree candidates, and more than 2,700 PhD candidates.

BIT consists of 17 academic schools, offering 60 undergraduate programs, 49 graduate programs, 23 doctoral programs. There are 3442 faculty and staff members, including 1168 professors and associate professors, among whom there are 6 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 10 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 17 members of Experts with Outstanding National Contributions, and 22 Cheung-Kong Scholars.

As a university traditionally focusing on polytechnic education and research, BIT is characterized by its excellence in the fields of mechanical engineering, optical engineering, information and communication engineering, engineering mechanics, power machinery and engineering, physical electronics, control engineering, and applied chemistry. BIT also pays great attention to the development of other disciplines, such as science, management, life science, humanities, and art design.

International cooperation and exchange are highly valued and actively developed. BIT has established collaborative ties with around 130 universities from 43 countries and regions in the world. Each year, there are more than 700 international students from around 50 countries studying at BIT. Some of them are undergraduate, graduate or doctorate students, some are exchange students, and some are Chinese Language students or Short-term Training program students. There are scholarships available to BIT’s international students, such as Chinese Government Scholarship, Beijing Municipal Government Scholarship, and the university scholarship. International Student Center (ISC) is fully dedicated to the international student’s affairs, from admission, registration, visa application to academic assistance and logistics service. ISC is also responsible for Chinese language programs.
